| Big cows biting after the blow in Delaware Bay
| Everyone wondered what the fishing would be like after the big noreaster blew itself out. |
| 11/4 11/10 Blackfish pretrips
Since there are only a few species around to target as we await the official opening of Blackfish season. I thought it was a good idea as I was putting my boat away for the season to run north to the Sandy Hook reef and practice some blackfishing. On the way up I was looking for bird activity and that was non exsistent in flat seas. We settle up on pone of favorite pieces and quickly caught and released over a dozen fish in an hour or so til the bite died down. This weekend we made our annual Rhode Island trip for some great blackfishing which is comparitive to the south Jersey late winter bite. We had our boat limit in a few hours with topping the 9 pound range.
A couple of pointers for the new guys and old salts.
1. as long as you have good structure under, you need to patient and wait till the bite gets going. It will sometimes start with catching a bunch of shorts till the bigger fish take over the area.
2. determine the bite = whether they start scratching the bait or comping and releasing. You got to swing at the tug and wait out the scratching and nibbling.
3. experiment with your baits: pieces, whole small, large double hooked crabs. Find what size, type and color is making them feed more aggressively.
Blackfish is both fun and frustrating but definitely worth the time and effort. Good luck to all and good fishing. |

| 10/12 bluefin in close

After a week in Cabo and hearing about the great bite going on between the Oil wreck and the Monster ledge, I was itching to get out there. |
| Last day of sea bass fishing
| Loads of sea bass on the offshore wrecks |

| 8/26 Sandy Hook surf filled with bluefish
| With the aftereffects of Hurricane Bill fast becoming just a memory, the Sandy Hook surf is picking up where the action was before the big coastal storm. Lots of bait, snapper blues, short fluke, and small bluefish have been keeping anglers interested - and happy. |
| 8/25 Great Conditions, Surf Fishing Off
The Sandy Hook surf was showing some signs of life last week, before Hurricane Bill passed offshore. Lots of bait, snapper bluefish, and pods of rampaging bluefish all made things interesting. Now that the seas have finally calmed down, only some signs of life can be seen. |
| 8/21 Sandy Hook surf braces for Bill
| The Sandy Hook surf is loaded with short fluke. Hurricane Bill's approach is going to stir the mix. It is anyone's guess whether the big blow is going to help or hurt local fishing afterwards. |
| 8/18 INSHORE BLUEFIN SOUTH PRINCESS
Fishing was good for other slow for us. |
| Limit catches of flukasauruses
| Fluke fishing remains outstanding |
| 8/18 Sandy Hook surf shows definite signs of life
The summer doldrums are something to be endured, not enjoyed during July and August. It is an understatement to say that there has not been much good news to write about regarding the Sandy Hook surf in recent weeks. This morning's action was very encouraging. |
| 8/8 Bluefin report
| Sometimes an a angler can get so confused as to what technique will be the most effective, myself included.
| Big fluke on the wrecks
| Lots of big fluke hanging tight on the wrecks |
| 8/7 Fluke run picking up steam in Raritan Bay
| A rotten economy, lackluster fishing, and plenty of dismal weather have seriously hurt Raritan Bay fluking this season. There are flourishes of fish but the run still is not up to the standards of past years. |
| 8/5 Quiet Sandy Hook surf
| Not much happening in the Sandy Hook surf. Not surprising that July and August are the summer doldrums. If you set your sights lower, you can still have some fun on ultralight gear. |
| Big fluke on the structure
Big fluke are plentiful on the wrecks and artificial reefs |
| 8/3 Sandy Hook surf paved with short fluke
| I fished my favorite Sandy Hook shoreline today during the midday hours for fluke. Not only did I experience an extraordinary weather day, I also caught fish. |
| Great Bluefin and Yellowfin bite continues
| What better way to celebrate my 40th birthday than to on the water fishing for tuna.
| 7/30 Big party boat fluke
| Summertime and fluke fishing on Raritan Bay always go well together. Although this has not yet qualified as a banner season for these great-tasting summer flounder, occasional catches of nice fish have kept things interesting. I witnessed one such catch this morning. |
| 7/29 Sandy Hook surf caught in summer doldrums
I never have high expectations for the North Jersey surf during July and August. High water temperatures just put fish off their normal feeding habits. Plenty of short fluke are around if you try for them. |
| 7/22 1st bluefin trip of the year!
Well, I has been an frustrating month knowing the bluefin have been around for the the last 3-4 weeks and I have not been able to get out there. |
| 7/20 slow day of fluking
| Although we great weather, we also had slow conditions
| 7/22 Rough surf, strong currents hamper Sandy Hook surf
| Fishing the Sandy Hook surf this morning was very difficult due to a big heave coming onshore from yesterday's big blow and strong currents associated with the full moon. However, the lack of fish was the biggest negative impacting the fishing. |
| Flukasaurus fishing continues to be outstanding
| The fluke bite continues to yield lots of quality fish |
| 7/20 SOS in North Jersey surf
| Fished the Sandy Hook surf early this morning. Great weather; terrible fishing. |
| 7/17 Raritan Bay fluking
| With the North Jersey surf in the grip of the summer doldrums, my brother Ed of Edison and I decided to take a half-day fluke party boat out on Raritan Bay as a change of pace. Although the fishing wasn't terrific, we did bring fish fillets home. |
| 7/15 North Jersey surf comatose
| July and August are notorious for providing poor surf action so the lack of fish in recent weeks should not be surprising. The nice weather we have enjoyed recently has pushed the water temperature up and the fishing action way down. |
| Fluke fishing still outstanding
The fluke were hungry this week |
| 2 days of fishing for Fluke and Sharks
It was a bad day of sharking and a decent AM if bottom fishing.
| 7/13 Excellent weather, poor fishing
The weather this morning was terrific - for the beach, but not necessarily for fishing. The sunrise was spectacular but the fish took the day off. |
| Fluke fishing on fire
| Best July fluke fishing I have seen in recent years |
| 7/6 Good weather, bad fishing
| It has been nice to finally have a nice run of summer weather without rain and t-storms in the forecast. The beach was spectacular this morning but the fishing was simply awful. |
| 6/29 Raritan Bay Flukin
| Tough Drift equals Tough Fluking
| 7/1 Raritan Bay party boat fluking
| Had my first day of the fluke season out on Raritan Bay. The weather forecast was threatening but the biggest disappointment was the lack of fish. |
| 6/29 Summer surf doldrums settling in
| It is almost July; the surf water temperature is getting into the high 60s; and bass action is becoming just a memory. Yep, the summer doldrums are beginning to settle into the North Jersey surf. |
| Good deep water flukin
| Lots of big fluke in the deep water |
| Exellent shark fishing
| Sharks feeding on sand eels inside 20 fathom line |
| 6/26=6/27 inshore and offshore report
| Fishing for bass and bottom fish on Thurday and offshore in Friday.
| 6/23 Not much happening
| The Sandy Hook surf was very quiet this morning. The waves and the incoming tide were high; few anglers along the shoreline; no fish. |
| 6/19 Rough Sandy Hook surf
| Surfcasters had a tough week with the weather - this week and last week. Fishing has been good when conditions permit. |
| 6/15 Spotty Sandy Hook surf action
| The striper and bluefish action has slowed down significantly in the Sandy Hook surf but patiently working the shoreline can still pay dividends before the July and August summer doldrums set in. Surfcasters' biggest foe this spring - as it was last year - has been Mother Nature. |
| Bass shift eating patterns
| As summer closely approaches, striped bass eating patterns are changing.
| 6/10 Fish blitz the Sandy Hook surf
| Here is another of those good news, bad news scenarios. Fish blitzed the Sandy Hook surf this morning but not bass or bluefish. Sea robins and short fluke provided the action with just one blue making an appearance. |
| Bass here today and gone tomorrow?
| It seems the trophy bass that have been caught are moving every tide with the bait
| 6/8 Sandy Hook surf disappoints
| Despite many anglers fishing a variety of baits and lures, the Sandy Hook surf has yielded very few fish in recent days. The disappointing fishing developed after last Friday's stormy weather and while huge schools of mossbunkers were lingering offshore. |
| 6/6 Now we're talkin!
| They showed up in pods this week, and in schools yesterday..... result.. BIG BASS! |
| 6/7 Bunker schools return to Sandy Hook
| Here's a good news/bad news type of report. The good news is that the huge schools of mossbunkers that dominated the waters off Sandy Hook last week are back. The bad news is that no bass or bluefish were targeting those plentiful forage fish. |
| 6/2 Starting to see good signs.....
| Grabbed the binocs and scanned the surf today off Ventnor... guess what? |
| Drum and Fluke Delaware Bay
| Both drum and keeper size fluke being caught in Delaware Bay |
| 6/2 Stripers still available in the Sandy Hook surf
| Although the fishing isn't terrific, striped bass are still available in the Sandy Hook surf if you are willing to invest the time and make the effort. Fishing bait is definitely outperforming lures in putting fish on the beach. |
| 6/1 Brisk morning along the Sandy Hook surf
| Our wacky spring weather continues to bedevil surfcasters. Some days the weather is summerlike; on many other occasions the weather is cold and forbidding. It was brisk and windy along the Sandy Hook shoreline this morning but wonderful compared to what we experienced this time last week. |
| 5/31 Bunker schools gone from Sandy Hook
| The vast schools of mossbunder that dominated North Jersey waters yesterday were gone this morning. However, the great number of boats that were attracted to those baitfish yesterday still were around but heading to different destinations today. The surf fishing today was about the same as yesterday's: disappointing, given the circumstances. |
| 5/30 Huge bunker schools draw crowds
| Boat anglers had a decided advantage over surfcasters this morning along the North Jersey shoreline. The potential was there for some memorable fishing for both types of anglers. |
| 5/28 Sandy Hook surf still rebounding from storm
Surf fishing has been good so far this spring when conditions have been favorable. The North Jersey shoreline got a major onshore blast of wind and water the past couple of days which put the fishery there on hold. |
| 5/25/09 Trophy Bass fishing
First trip aboard the Juana Go becomes a trophy bass trip. |
| Big drum hitting the scales
| The largest members of the black drum family have entered the Delaware Bay to feed and spawn. |
| 5/23 Long Run... no fun. A flukin shame.
| Figuring that opening day of flounder season would have my favorite spots stacked up with boats... we tried another strategy.... bad idea. |
| 5/22 Great weather, few fish
Wonderful spring weather is always welcome but it often puts a crimp in the fishing action. That seemed to be the case early this morning at Sandy Hook - and the entire week for that matter. |
| 5/21 Spectacular weather, poor fishing
| The weather at Sandy Hook this morning around sunrise was spectacular. The fishing did not match the weather conditions. |
| 5/19 Spotty Sandy Hook surf results
| Even though the surf action at Sandy Hook has been up-and-down lately, the ups are more frequent. Some days, the results are simply so-so. That was the case this morning. |
| 5/18 Sandy Hook surf disappoints
| After it provided two weeks of fairly good fishing for bass and blues, the Sandy Hook surf was absolutely dead this morning. Weather conditions were not good but the surf was eminently fishable. The fish just chose to not show up. |
| 5/13 Big blues dominate Sandy Hook surf
| You can find both striped bass and bluefish in the Sandy Hook surf but if you want to have some fun target the big blues that are adding some real spice to the fishing there. These 28 - 30 inch fish are very aggressive and energetic. |
| 5/12 Add a splash of blue to the Sandy Hook surf
Bluefish have been cruising through the Sandy Hook surf for over a week now but I had my first encounter with them this morning. Prior to today, I had focused my efforts on striped bass but decided to test the waters for bluefish. They did not disappoint. |
| The drum bite continues to intensify
| The size of the drum and the number of drum keeps increasing |
| 5/11 Tough Sandy Hook surf
| My expectations were high this morning when my brother and I fished Sandy Hook at sunrise this morning. Fishing was good last week when conditions were right. The bass just didn't show any enthusiasm this morning. |
| 5/8 Sandy Hook stripers
| When conditions are favorable, the striped bass run in the Sandy Hook surf is remarkable. Unfortunately, weather and sea conditions all too often have been negative forces. |
| 5/6 Sandy Hook surf loaded with stripers!
| They took their time getting here, but stripers are dominating the Sandy Hook surf this week. Bluefish are around but you simply have to be in the right place at the right time to hit a bonanza. The only negative in the equation is the weather. |
| The drum bite begins
| After a fantastic end to the best spring tog fishing I have seen, we started targeting black drum in the Delaware Bay. |
| 5/3 You have to look, but they are there!
Buttoned up and chummed clambellies..... |
| 5/3 Stripers aplenty in the rainy Sandy Hook surf
| The weather was gloomy this morning at the Hook but the rewards were worth the discomfort. Although shorts are dominating the fishery at this time, what the run lacks in fish size it makes up for in sheer numbers. |
| 4/30 Let the striper run begin!
| They took their time showing up but striped bass are finally being found in the North Jersey surf by anglers who put in the time and effort to catch them. The water temperature which has passed the 50 degree threshold is fueling the run. |
| Great tog fishing
| Best spring tog fishing I have ever seen. |
| 4/27 Raritan Bay Bass continue to be only consistent fishery!
| 2009 will be known as the worst flounder fishery in recent year! |
| 4/27 Sandy Hook Surf Report
| The North Jersey surf continues to disappoint anglers seeking striped bass. Despite summerlike weather and ideal conditions, the water remains cold and the fish scarce. |
| 4-26 Shadow Lake
| The sun was hot but the water was cold and so was the fishing... |
| 4-19 Barnegat Bay
| Try to find some early season stripers but no luck. |
| 4-18 Toms River (trout)
| The weather was here but the fish weren't! |
| Soakin a few clams....
| It was time to bust out the waders and the realllllly long rods... |
| 4-11 Opening Day of Trout Fishing
| Did you go? If you did I doubt you were disappointed... |
| April 2009 - Let it begin!
| The 2009 fishing season is in full swing, with several fisheries going strong!
